About the Company

Vertex Manufacturing is a Brisbane-based precision engineering and manufacturing firm, supplying complex industrial machinery components to mining and automation companies across Australia and Southeast Asia. Founded in 2008, they operate multiple workshops and employ over 400 staff across design, fabrication, and assembly. With a high rate of new operator onboarding and complex equipment setups, Vertex sought an immersive solution to reduce training time and minimize setup errors in the field.

Client Overview

Vertex Manufacturing engaged Destro Technologies to build an immersive AR/VR platform designed to train new operators, visualize complex machine builds, and support remote assembly supervision. The objective was to scale training, reduce travel required for field teams, and reduce error rates in on-site installations.

Project Summary

Destro Technologies delivered an end-to-end AR/VR solution:

  1. A VR module for new hires to virtually walk through the factory, learn machine anomalies and simulate assembly tasks.
  2. An AR mobile/web overlay app for field technicians to scan real machines on-site and visualize step-by-step assembly instructions, part placement, and maintenance overlays.
  3. Integration with Vertex’s ERP and training LMS to track progress, issue tasks, and log completion metrics

Challenges

  1. Training new operators was time-intensive and required machinery downtime.
  2. On-site assembly errors were high due to complex component layouts and lack of visual aids.
  3. Field supervisors had to travel frequently to remote sites, increasing costs and delays.
  4. No interactive, scalable way to simulate machine builds before physical installation.
  5. Need for cross-platform access (desktop VR, mobile AR, tablet in the field).

Solution

  1. Created a VR training module allowing new operators to simulate machine operation in a safe virtual environment.
  2. Developed an AR app for field technicians to overlay visual instructions on live machinery via tablet/smartphone.
  3. Integrated platform with Vertex’s LMS and ERP so training results and field activity are automatically logged.
  4. Enabled supervisors to remotely monitor technician progress and completion via real-time dashboards.
  5. Provided ongoing support & content updates to incorporate new machine models and training scenarios.

Results

  1. Training time for new operators reduced by 44%, enabling faster ramp-up.
  2. Field assembly error rate dropped by 58% in the first six months.
  3. Travel and onsite supervision costs cut by 30% due to remote monitoring and AR support.
  4. Technician satisfaction scores improved to 4.9/5 average, indicating high adoption.
  5. ROI achieved within 8 months, with scalable annual savings projected across sites.
